逍遥散 Xiao Yao San

How Xiao Yao San is taken

The same eight herbs reach you three ways. Here is how each form is prepared and typically dosed — descriptively, not as a prescription.

Teapills (Xiao Yao Wan)

The most common retail form: small pills of powdered herbs. Patent labels typically suggest around 8 pills, 3 times daily — follow your product's label and your practitioner's advice over any generic figure. See Xiao Yao Wan for how the pill form relates to the classical powder.

Concentrated granules

Extract granules dissolved in hot water, dosed by the gram according to the manufacturer's concentration ratio. This is the form most herbal pharmacies dispense today, and doses are commonly split morning and evening.

The classical draft

The original instruction: grind the herbs to a coarse powder and simmer a measure briefly with a little roasted ginger and mint added at the end, then drink warm before meals. Almost nobody prepares it this way outside teaching clinics — but the late-added aromatics are why a freshly drawn draft tastes and works a little differently than pills.

Sensible expectations

Practitioners generally review a formula like this after two to four weeks rather than expecting overnight change, and adjust or switch formulas based on the response. If nothing has shifted after a fair trial — or anything feels wrong sooner — that is information, and a reason to reassess rather than escalate the dose.
